2. Mind-Body Connection

This is one of the most important habits to set up. The mind-body connection is real. Check out this article with studies suggesting Mind-body Connection is Built into Brain.

In psychology, it is a two way relationship where they will play off each other. In other words, one can influence the other. So be sure you are in sync. Here are the areas to focus on for the mind-body connection to thrive:

  • self care
  • exercise
  • sleep
  • nutrition
  • thoughts

So, when you practice the areas above, they will influence each other. When I started eating more nutritious foods and chose organic, whole foods, I began to exercise more regularly. When i exercised, I was able to improve my sleep. Truly, each one of these areas can impose change on the other. Try it!

3. Rest and Reflection

Taking time to rest and reflect on progress is important for healthy mindset habits. Afterall, it can’t all be work and no fun. Here are some tips for rest and reflection:

  • Allow yourself to feel proud when you have accomplished something or reached a goal.
  • Celebrate the wins, even when they are small.
  • Track progress so you can see the milestones. Turning the dial 1% each day can really add up.
  • Take time to recognize how far you have come and what challenges you had to overcome as well as what was successful in your journey.
  • Recharge your energy with whatever that is for you, personally. Practice doing nothing and take stock in what you have.

4. Positive Affirmations

Everyone, at any age, should be practicing positive affirmations as a healthy mindset habit.

They are “I” statements or thoughts you say to yourself that make you feel good. They are intended to build self esteem and confidence. They remind you of your many abilities and talents. Many athletes and successful people use this habit to reach their goals.

Positive affirmations can block negative thoughts and help combat imposter syndrome. Use them to pump yourself up!

Here are examples of positive affirmations for someone manifesting personal growth:

  • “I believe in myself and my abilities”
  • “I am proud of my courage”
  • “I can transform obstacles into opportunities”
  • “I am an excellent _______(fill in the blank).”
  • “I deserve the good fortune flowing to me”
  • “I am grateful for knowledge and intellect”
  • “I prioritize my healthy boundaries”
  • “I accept myself”
  • “I love and care for myself so I am strong”
  • “I allow myself to stumble so that I learn”

5. Flexibility

Being flexible is the ability to adapt to change and is something to practice.

A former mentor once told me, “Keep your knees bent and you will not fall”.

It reminded me of being on a boat or paddleboarding and bending my knees to keep my balance. I cannot control the wind or the waves, but I can be prepared by being flexible. Yes, the boat may rock back and forth. It may even tilt and almost capsize. But when my knees are bent, I am prepared to pivot.

Here are the ways to practice being flexible:

  • pivot when necessary
  • accept new opportunities
  • be a problem solver
  • be a divergent thinker
  • stretch your understanding
  • adapt to fresh ideas
  • embrace change

7. Forgiveness

Forgiveness is key to mental AND physical health. Learn to let “it” go and have no regrets.

Practice forgiving others even if they aren’t sorry.

This is where journaling can help. Write down your forgiveness statements, especially if it is difficult to talk to them about it.

Studies show that holding resentment can affect your physical health. So practice forgiveness starting with yourself.

Add some kindness and non judgmental beliefs to your attitude and move forward. Release the negative feelings and thoughts.

9. Fail Forward

Success doesn’t come to anyone without some failure. Every person who has ever “made it”, had to fail a few times and make mistakes, before getting there. This is called failing forward.

It means that we can use these failures as opportunities to grow from. Learn from the mistakes and make the improvements needed. It means keep moving forward, one step at a time.

When you learn to accept your failures and see them as lessons, you will develop more resilience. You will get up faster next time. You will have less fear. You will learn that consistency is necessary to defeat failure.

A personal Fail Forward story:

Hands exchanging US dollars with a pink card reader, notebook, and yarn on a marble table.

One failure in my life turned into a success story simply because I was able to learn from the mistakes I made and improve the situation.

I had a brick and mortar retail store of art supplies. It was a struggle some months to cover overhead, which was a huge amount due to the financial investment.

However, our other side of the business, an art convention roadshow, was profitable. So we decided to close the storefront and take all the merchandise on the road.

We traveled for almost two years, with this business model and made 3x the amount of money with very little expenses. This could have been a story of another retail store going out of business, but we persevered and thought out of the box. We knew we had a good product, it just needed a better audience.

This is an example of failing forward: We learned from what failed and improved it to be successful.

10. Cultivate leadership

Cultivating leadership in yourself is a way to develop the skills and strengths to set you apart from others, by being equipped to help others succeed.

You can start to develop these skills by:

  • mastering time management.
  • finding a mentor to learn from.
  • surrounding yourself with like-minded people who have high aspirations and previous success.
  • practice mindfulness and self motivation.
  • Continue to seek education. become a lifelong learner.
